District Education Coordinator - Nuwara Eliya


The PALAM/A (bridge in Tamil and Sinhala) project aims to encourage the self-sufficiency of the Sri Lankan government's school meal program, and improve primary school children's literacy skills through improving the quality of literacy instruction; improving children’s attentiveness by decreasing short term hunger: improving children’s attendance: and increase the use of health, nutrition and dietary practices in Sri Lanka.

Reporting to the District Manager - Education, support the implementation and coordination of the programme activities to improve the literacy of early grade school-age children, focusing on USDAs 5Ts: text, tongue, testing, teaching and time.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

Staff reporting to this post: N/A

Role Dimensions: The position will also support to maintain the relationship between Save the Children & Provincial Education Ministries, Zonal and Divisional Education Offices.


Quality implementation of Project activities as per the activity plan and coordination with District Manager Education.  

Project Management and Quality:

  • Supporting to improve the literacy of early grade school-age children, focusing on USDAs 5Ts: text, tongue, testing, teaching and time.
  • Support organization of workshops and related training.
  • Supporting any translations and preparatory work for workshops and training.
  • Support in organizing community base Literacy events and other activities planned.
  • Attend required internal training be able to support all project activities
  • Technical inputs and support on Literacy activities
  • Regular school visits for Implementation of quality literacy boost programme.
  • Maintain good partnerships with local authorities
  • Collaboratively work with government stakeholders and implementation partners.
  • Maintain records and document databases.

MEAL System and approaches.

  • Coordinate baseline assessments at the provincial and zonal levels with the MEAL team.
  • Work closely with the M&E team on M&E initiatives.
  • Regular school visits for selection and Implementation of quality literacy boost programme.
  • Support District Manager Education in effective documentation of data on improved literacy outcomes, overall program successes, innovations, and promising practices related to improved literacy and disseminate through appropriate mechanisms.
  • Produce timely, accurate, compliant and quality data

Representation at provincial and district levels:

  • Support to maintain and improve active and regular working relationships with other organizations that are linked to the Education Programme.
  • Support to maintain good relationships with Province, Zonal and Divisional Education Officers and Schools.

  • Degree in related sociology/social siense or related field.
  • Essential
  • Experience in similar position for not less than 3 years.
  • Good communication skills
  • Sound knowledge in MS office packages
  • Good planning and organizing skills
